Did you know?

Rothera Research Station is the largest of the five research stations of the British Antarctic Survey. It can accommodate up to 120 people during the Antarctic summer but staff levels drop to around 20 in the Antarctic winter (which is now). Rothera, the easiest of the five stations to access as it has a crushed rock runway, is the centre for marine biology. It also deploys scientists into deep field sites to look at glaciology, biology and geology – to discover the history of Antarctica and how it affects the rest of the planet.

Still time to register!

It’s not too late so, if you haven’t yet registered your busk, add the details now … don’t miss out on our event of the year! Register now.

Buskers on ice!

If you've been checking our world map you will have seen red and blue dots appearing as busks were added. And how thrilling it was the day a red dot appeared in the Antarctic! We now have buskers on six of the seven continents. Can you help drum up support in Australia, New Zealand or Oceania? We would love to have world record-setting buskers on all seven continents …

The Antarctic Minkes

The Antarctic Minkes

Based at the British Antarctic Survey's Rothera Research Station in Antarctica, The Antarctic Minkes will be busking at noon their time (BST-3) on Sunday, 14th June. Their four members (photo, ©British Antarctic Survey, left to right): bass guitarists Tony McLaughlan (station electrician) and Riet van de Velde (chef), saxophonist Paul Craske (generator mechanic) and bass guitarist Danny Edmunds (boating officer) will busk their hearts out to the winter crew of 20 based at the station. Support this incredible band by donating to their busk at www.justgiving.com/antarctic_minkes.

Busking for the world record? Take a witness!

If you are taking part in our world record attempt for the biggest coordinated busk around the world you will need a witness to be with you throughout your record-setting busk. Your witness could be your bottler (did you see the explanation on our website?). You and they will also need to complete our witness statement, as evidence of your busk, so remember to download our form from our download pack before you set off.

Spotlight on more world record buskers

People from Goa, India (where we hope to start a new project) will take their musical instruments – and singing voices – to their annual London picnic at the Ruislip Lido, Middlesex, UK. You are warmly invited to join them – or donate to their busk at www.justgiving.com/goansformusequality.

In Kobe, Japan, commuters outside the JR Kobe station will be entertained by 1st café tonia playing gypsy jazz on the violin and guitar.

The Exsplats, a group of British expats, will sing madrigals and classical music, for three or four voices, near Schloss Charlottenburg in Berlin, Germany.

Now all we need is buskers in Australia, New Zealand or the Oceania islands thereabouts …

Send us your busking photos!

We’d love to have photos of your busks so, if you can ask someone to snap away, please do. You can either upload them on our Flickr page or email them to busk@musequality.org.

Keep spreading the word

Remember to keep telling musicians you know about the busk by forwarding them this newsletter (use the link at the top of the left hand column). We would love to have buskers on all seven continents – and we’re nearly there, thanks to our buskers in Antarctica. You never know who knows who so keep spreading the word and we may just do it!

Best wishes,

Laura
World Busk Coordinator

Your busk will raise money for Musequality which funds communal music projects for disadvantaged children in developing countries, giving them the skills and confidence they need to turn their lives around.
